What transforms a basic weave into art depends on the materials used and the intention set for the project. Create an artistic weave by pulling together different materials like collage papers, gelli prints, fabrics, dried foliage, and more. I will also walk you through how to create a simple loom out of watercolor paper and craft string. I also talk about how to set an intention for any art project and how it can infuse meaning into your art making.

Materials

  • (1) Sheet of 9 x 12 in. 140 lb. Watercolor Paper
  • Watercolor paints + brushes
  • Painters tape OR Washi tape
  • Cup for water & brushes
  • Craft thread, #3 Pearl Cotton OR equivalent
  • Embroidery needle
  • Thick needle or awl to pierce holes into paper
  • Variety of weaving materials (See suggestion list below)
  • Ruler + pencil

Weaving Materials: The more variety of materials you incorporate into your woven piece, the more interesting and rich your final piece will look. Here are some suggestions:

  • (Handmade papers (Mulberry, Washi, etc.)
  • Scraps of collage papers
  • Gelli prints
  • Pages of text (old textbooks, dictionaries, etc.)
  • Sari ribbon OR regular ribbon (1/4” wide)
  • Embroidery floss or pearl cotton

She believes everyone is born with a deep and inherent desire to be creative. The key is staying connected to that creativity as you become an adult. She believes having a creative practice is just as essential as a good night’s rest, exercise, and eating right. It provides benefits both spiritually and mentally. This leads to a sense of inner wholeness and wellbeing. Lisa encourages others not to deprive themselves and to try to do something creative daily.
