Sew a simple, beautifully useful gingham needlebook and learn the basics of the vintage technique of Chicken Scratch embroidery to adorn the cover. An easy to learn hand work method that is peacefully meditative to stitch.

Materials

  • One 7" x 5" piece of gingham fabric in quilting cotton or linen weight for cover (see note below)
  • One 7" x 5" piece of fabric for the inside cover (I used Liberty of London Tana Lawn)
  • One 7" x 6" piece of fabric for the inside pocket
  • One 5" x 4" piece of wool felt for inside page
  • One 7" x 5" piece of fusible interfacing or quilt batting
  • Template of stitch pattern (provided)
  • 1-2 colors of 6-strand embroidery floss
  • 6" embroidery hoop
  • Size 3 embroidery needle
  • 12" length of ribbon for closure
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing machine with coordinating thread
  • Iron and ironing surface
  • Thread snips (optional)

*Note- It is very important that the individual gingham squares measure ÂĽ" sq on your chosen fabric, which is a standard size in gingham. Using larger or smaller sized squares will not give you the best result for this project.

Blair Stocker

Blair is a textile artist and quiltmaker based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She designs scrappy patchwork quilts, with her favorite ones filled with meaningful fabrics. She has written 2 books and these days teaches her techniques both in person and online. In a desire to add more hand stitching to her studio practice a few years ago, she stumbled upon the vintage technique of Chicken Scratch embroidery, and has been obsessed ever since. Happily, it’s how she ends almost every day.
