Tray dyeing fabric is low mess and allows you to create incredibly beautiful textured fabrics that are unique to you.

Materials

  • Natural fiber fabric: dyers muslin, osnaburg and muslin are inexpensive to experiment with. Prepare by scouring/washing to remove any finishes. Do not use fabric softeners when drying
  • Dye: I use fiber reactive dye from Pro Chemical Supply or Dharma Trading. If you are new to dyeing, just pick 3 or 4 to start with. You don’t need them all.
  • Soda Ash
  • Salt
  • Mask-like an N95 for small particles
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Trays or small containers to hold your fabrics
  • Jars with lids and squeeze bottles
  • 5 gal bucket for soda ash solution and smaller bucket for salt water
  • Rubber gloves
  • Plastic to protect surfaces and cover the fabrics while batching
  • Rags for cleanup
    •
