This workshop will introduce stitch lovers to traditional Indian hand embroideries known as 'Phulkaris'. You will learn about their unusual stitch and colour combinations as well as the stories behind these exquisite textiles. By the end of the workshop, you'll have learnt the traditional stitch and created a mini Phulkari sampler.Â
Materials
- Embroidery Thread - as the threads are from India, I used DMC stranded cotton instead because I believe in adapting the artform so it's relevant to my context
- Needle - any needle with a wide eye, sharp point and that feels comfortable to use
- Fabric - heavy cotton or linens work best. Sometimes, I have also used upholstery fabrics
- Scissors
- Fabric Marker
- Hoop

Saima is a textile artist from Yorkshire, England. Her work has always had its roots in Indian embroidery traditions, mainly the Phulkari embroideries from Punjab. She learnt to stitch at the age of 12 years old in India. After a long break, she began stitching as an adult to express her experience of having a disabled daughter. Since then her work has evolved in both style and content and she uses stitch to create dreamscapes and images that inspire joy and magic.Â
