Learn to sew fabric mushroom hanging ornaments with realistic pleated underside gills, with Margeaux Davis from Willowynn. Perfect as Christmas tree ornaments, or string onto a garland or hanging mobile. Margeaux demonstrates soft sculpture techniques and tips in this simple but technical sewing project.

Materials

  • Small fabric scraps. Linen, heavy cotton or velvet are ideal for the tops of the mushrooms. Light-weight cotton is recommended for the mushroom’s underside and stalk
  • Piece of rigid flat plastic from the side of a milk or juice carton
  • Fabric - heavy cotton or linens work best. Sometimes, I have also used upholstery fabrics
  • Regular sewing machine thread
  • White embroidery floss or fine crochet cotton
  • Templates (included on page 7) printed out
  • Sewing needles. One small needle and one embroidery needle
  • Fabric pencil or pen
  • Scissors. Fabric scissors and regular paper scissors
  • Pins
  • Long surgical tweezers, knitting needle, skewer or similar. To help turn out and stuff shapes
  • Drinking straw (for turning out stalk shape)

Margeaux is a soft toy designer, doll maker and children's book illustrator living on the far north coast of New South Wales, Australia.

Margeaux's soft toys, dolls and ornaments are made using discarded fabric scraps, old woollen blankets, remnants and worn out clothing. Many of her designs are available as digital sewing patterns which can be downloaded and maded at home. Her designs are inpired by old folk tales, children's stories and the natural world.

With a professional background in environmental education, Margeaux now spends her days drawing, painting and sewing from a tiny garden studio, surrounded by macadamia nut farms and cow paddocks.
