Make joyful felt bird brooches from scrap felt, left over thread, and scraps of fabric. I use simple stitches and let the process lead me so the little characters are different every time. Your bird face won’t look like mine, and that is perfect - it’s your stitching, let yourself follow your joy.

Materials.

  • Scrap felt in three or four different colours. Two pieces about the size of your palm to make the main body of the brooch plus some random smaller pieces for the features.
  • Embroidery threads. Whatever you prefer to stitch with. I often use stranded embroidery cotton, cotton a broder or cotton perle.
  • Stuffing (optional)
    • Wool fleece, cotton balls, fibre fill, scrap threads/fabric are all good.

Michelle Hamill

Michelle's work reveals her background in mathematics, science and technology. It is inspired by the workings of nature, by walks in the wild high country, and a deep fascination in pattern and geometry in organic forms.

She works with textiles: fabric and thread, old and new as well as wire, glass beads, woollen felt and stuffing. Using a needle and thread she explores traditional needlework techniques in unexpected ways to create texture, pattern and colour.
