Get the VIP PassDiscover the magic of the cyanotype process. We’ll begin with a brief look at the history of the cyanotype process, followed by a demonstration of the tools and techniques used to create these distinctive blue images.
Materials
- A kit of dry chemicals, like the Jacquard cyanotype chemical kit. The kit must contain:
Part A: Potassium ferricyanide
Part B: Ferric ammonium citrate - Alternatively, pre-coated cyanotype paper can be purchased from places like The Cyanotype Store: https://cyanotypestore.com/product-category/cyanotype-colored-paper/white-paper/
- watercolor paper; I recommend Canson XL watercolor
- gloves, if desired
- plastic or glass container for working solution
- plastic (non-metal) measuring spoon
- hake or foam brush (without metal ferrules)
- sturdy cardboard, larger than paper size used
- sheet of non-UV glass, edges taped
- binder clips
- source of water and tray or bucket for washing print
- pressed plants, objects, or stencils
- access to direct sun
- location for drying print, out of direct sun

Madge Evers is a visual artist whose practice is rooted in sustained attention to plant life and its slower, less visible processes. She is the author of Printing with the Sun, a practical guide to the cyanotype process published by Storey in 2026 and teaches workshops for people of all ages.
Using alternative photographic techniques, mushroom spores, painting, and collage, her work explores the intersection of observed landscape details and imagined botanical forms. Her work has been exhibited throughout the Northeast, and she has participated in artist residencies in Massachusetts, Virginia, Ireland, and New York. Madge lives and works in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts.
